Domain Leader: Associate Professor Barry Watson

Human beings often put themselves in situations that cause debilitating injury. Such injuries can lead to intensive rehabilitation for both the mind and body.

Many people are affected by road accidents, sporting clashes or improper use of equipment at work. In order to prevent injury and also promote optimal rehabilitation, the Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation research domain develops tactics to modify human behaviour and define policy to ensure the behaviours are instilled within industry and the community.

This area includes scientists and scholars across human movement studies, health psychology, optometry, epidemiology, medical physics, public health, biomedical and civil engineering.

Particular emphasis is given to developing and evaluating assessment tools and interventions, many incorporating new technologies, in populations or activities where risks are especially high and the personal and economic benefits of interventions greatest (e.g. driving and mobility in the elderly, high risk industries such as mining and transport).

Specific applications are diverse, ranging from remote monitoring of human motion, to alcohol and drug driving intervention strategies, the evaluation of personnel selection methods, and development of improved prostheses.
