QUT has an outstanding record in capturing the value of its biomedical research and deploying it through the formation and incubation of start-up companies in Queensland. This record dates back to 1980 with the formation of the Centre for Applied Immunology, a joint QIT and industry-funded centre to develop and commercialise monoclonal antibodies in Australia. The Centre for Applied Immunology became MabCo which subsequently became the successful publicly-listed company AGEN Biomedical Ltd. AGEN continued to conduct all its research at QUT's Gardens Point campus until 1988.
Both AGEN and PanBio have maintained a close collaboration with QUT. In 1988, QUT and AGEN formed a new start-up company, GeneCo. This company developed and patented the highly successful FNC Technology which was acquired by the world's leading DNA chip company Affymetrix in 2000 and has since been licensed to Orchid BioSciences in the USA for SNP analysis on an international scale.
A number of other successful companies have formed out of QUT-developed intellectual property, four of which are highlighted below:
Future start-up companies formed from IHBI research will be created and managed by bluebox via its commercialisation process.
